Community Support

US Teacher Helping US Student

Imagine a vigorous learning environment, where curiosity is celebrated, challenging academics are embraced, and support is constant.

The Hun School of Princeton was founded as a tutoring school in 1914 by Dr. John Gale Hun, an educator who believed that individual mentorship is foundational to academic success. Today, that belief remains a hallmark of a Hun School education. We prioritize personal attention and thoughtful guidance because we believe that every student benefits from an extra explanation, an opportunity to ask more questions, and devoted faculty who create intentional plans tailored to their students’ goals.

Counseling and Wellness

At Hun, health and wellness is a shared responsibility and a cornerstone of student life. Our Counseling and Wellness team takes a proactive, holistic approach to supporting students’ social, emotional, and academic wellbeing, fostering belonging and meaningful connection within our community.

The department consists of dedicated counselors for the Upper School, Middle School, and international students, ensuring developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive support. Several members of the Counseling and Wellness team live on campus as dorm parents, providing around-the-clock care and guidance for residential students.

Counselors partner closely with families, offering regular parent webinars, in-school programming, wellness workshops, and individualized student support. Whether navigating academic stress, social challenges, or moments of growth, students have consistent access to trusted adults who are invested in their well-being.

DIGITAL WELLNESS

We believe presence matters. Hun’s Digital Wellness policy supports focused learning and meaningful connection by limiting cell phone use during the academic day. By removing digital distractions, classrooms become spaces for engagement, collaboration, and thoughtful discussion — and students have more opportunities to build authentic relationships with peers and teachers.

Digital wellness education is also integrated into our programming, helping students develop healthy technology habits, understand safe and responsible technology use, and build awareness around balance in an increasingly connected world.

WELLNESS WEDNESDAYS

Each Wednesday, our community participates in Wellness Wednesday, a dedicated initiative centered on a new aspect of well-being each week. One week could consist of a physical fitness activity while the next could be dedicated to mindfulness and stress management. Programming for Wellness Wednesday is engaging, relevant, and community driven; we create intentional space within the school week for students and adults alike to press pause, reset, and strengthen the habits that support well-being.

Student Support Team

The Student Support Team, made up of faculty and staff across the academic aisles, meets each week to create plans for students who might be struggling with academic, social, emotional, or other health issues. Each student is assigned a faculty member, separate from their advisor, who aids the student in implementing a plan, communicates with the student's family, and acts as a liaison between the student and their teachers. The team might also explore and recommend outside resources. The Student Support Team also discusses issues affecting the student body at large, which might affect students socially and emotionally.

US Advisory

Advisory

A tenet of the Hun experience, Advisory is a group of eight to ten students led by a faculty member that meets daily. Grade Level Deans thoughtfully place each Upper School student in an Advisory prior to their arrival; Upper School students stay with their Advisory group until graduation while Middle School students rotate advisors each year.

A student’s advisor serves as a steady source of encouragement, guidance, and accountability. Faculty advisors are often the first point of contact for students and parents when questions about life at Hun arise, and they play an essential role in helping new students transition smoothly into the community.

Advisories meet regularly to discuss everything from the course selection process to the ebbs and flows of the academic year. One week they might focus on time management strategies; the next might involve collaborating on a group initiative or reflecting on shared experiences. Advisory provides students with built-in social and academic support systems, becoming a home base and a moment of clarity amid the hustle and bustle of the school year.

Extra Help

Our Extra Help period is built into the beginning and end of each day, giving students the opportunity to dive deeper into course material, meet with teachers for test prep or homework support, and make meaningful progress at their own pace.

Outside of the traditional class setting, students have the opportunity to approach teachers with questions on assignments, ideas, and goals. All teachers are available during this time, and the best part about it is that everyone takes advantage of it!

Participation Requirement

We believe that balancing academics and extra-curriculars is in our students' best interest, so participation is mandatory. Our healthy menu of after-school sports, arts, and wellness activities makes for a tough choice! Middle School students fulfill their requirement during the last period of the day, while Upper School students participate after the school day ends at 3:30 p.m.

Academic Accountability

Academic accountability is an important part of student well-being. Clear expectations around deadlines help students develop responsibility, time management, and organizational skills while preventing work from accumulating to an overwhelming level. By encouraging students to stay engaged with their learning and seek support when challenges arise, our Academic Accountability Policy promotes both academic success and healthy, sustainable habits. The policy provides a consistent framework for completing assignments while recognizing that students may occasionally need flexibility due to excused absences or unforeseen circumstances. When those situations arise, students work with their teachers to create a plan that supports continued learning and progress.
