Susan Hendricks ’91 has had many roles during her storied career. From her early days as a local field reporter to the anchor of HLN’s Weekend Express, and now book author, however, it all goes back to something she heard legendary broadcast journalist Walter Cronkite say when he spoke at Arizona State University, where she was a student.
Mr. Cronkite spoke about “the responsibility of witnessing history, of witnessing stories, and the importance of a journalist,” says Ms. Hendricks. She was hooked, and went on to earn a B.A. in Journalism. A few years later, she was able to interview her inspiration. She keeps a framed photo of that interview with Mr. Cronkite displayed in her Atlanta home, reminding her of her role as a witness to history.

Another successful event in the [comic] books for the Digital Art and Animation Club! The 2024 Comic Fest was a night full of Dungeon and Dragon quests, Super Smash Bros, fandom, and endless opportunities for students to tap into their creative side. Featured activities included a workshop hosted by cartoonist Jamar Nicholas to a Q&A, a book signing with Marvel comic writer Erica Schultz, and a trivia contest hosted by Floyd Bennett from Final Boss Comics.

Gabby R. ’25 has been the president of The Hun School’s Gender and Sexuality Alliance club since her 10th grade year; she was recommended for the position by teachers who recognized both her passion for advocating for the LGBTQ+ community and her commendable leadership skills. In her two years as club president, Gabby has focused her efforts on continuing to nurture a safe space for students on campus and partnering with other clubs and affinity groups to highlight intersectionality on campus. Some of her proudest accomplishments are moments where she has been able to bring different communities together to recognize that everyone is more similar than different.

For one week of the School’s spring break, seventeen middle school students traveled to Cotui, Dominican Republic for an immersive, community-oriented (and technology-free!) service trip. The School partnered with VISIONS Service Adventures, a grassroots organization with a commitment to community building through service; every VISIONS trip includes construction projects, environmental work, and social service. For Hun students, their time in Cotui was spent working at a local primary school. In only one week, they built a concrete patio on the school grounds, painted a mural, and built a concrete wall that separated the school from the street to provide privacy and noise reduction.

Booking Ceremony for the Arts
Class of 2024
Join us for the first annual Booking Ceremony for the Arts! This ceremony will recognize members of the Class of 2024 who are matriculating to art schools or conservatories, with the intention of pursuing a career in the arts. The Hun School Performing and Visual Arts Departments will celebrate their graduating artists' first professional "booking."

The Hun School Welcomes
Leopoldo López '89
Distinguished Alum Leopoldo López ’89 is a Venezuelan political leader and pro-democracy activist. He is the founder and national coordinator of the Voluntad Popular political party. In 2014, Mr. López was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment for organizing a government protest. He spent four years in a military prison, a year and a half in house arrest and another year and a half in the Spanish embassy in Caracas under political asylum. Mr. López has been recognized by Amnesty International as a prisoner of conscience and his detention was declared unjust by the United Nations. In October 2020, he escaped from Venezuela through Colombia to join his family in Spain. In exile, Mr. López continues his fight for Venezuela ́s democracy and freedom and encourages others to fight for what they believe is right. Mr. López has received several international awards for his fight for democracy and freedom in Venezuela. He was honored with the 2014 Harvard alumni achievement award, the NED´S 2013 Democracy Award, the 2016 Geneva Summit Courage Award and the 2017 Sakharov Prize for Freedom and Thought. He is a graduate of The Hun School, Kenyon College, and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
