Re-imagining the Mission

In early 2015, The Hun School underwent an accreditation process with the Middle States Association. Amidst an otherwise glowing report, the visiting committee suggested the School examine its current mission statement, which had been in place for almost twenty years. Its promises were undisputed, yet somewhat broad. Further, members of the school community were beginning to feel that it did not accurately capture the School’s more contemporary ethos. Soon thereafter, the Board of Trustees endorsed a re-write.
The new mission statement is not a departure from the School’s traditional ideals. But rather, it re-affirms some of The Hun School’s more ardent, ever-lasting promises. It also includes reference to some of our more contemporary promises. The goal was to ensure that the mission reflects who we are, as well as where we are going.  With this in mind, the process was extensive and enlisted the help of many.  


Several different constituent groups were involved in the process of re-writing the mission. Values and ideas were collected from faculty, students, parents, and board members. Ultimately, however, the crafting of the mission was put into the hands of a small group of faculty representatives and Headmaster Jonathan Brougham. The group spent weeks researching effective mission statements and even worked with a leading educational consultant to establish important criteria and tone.  Using the research collected from the community, each then submitted a draft. Strengths from various drafts were selected and a collective draft was created.  That draft was then submitted to several leadership groups, including the educational committee of the Board of Trustees.
The Board of Trustees adopted the final draft in January of 2016.

It is the compass by which all decisions are made and all progress is measured. I believe that our new mission statement is a concise and graceful statement of what makes The Hun School so exceptional.”
