Retirement: Laura Docter, Ph.D.

Laura Docter, PH.D., began teaching in the History and Global Studies Department in 2019 and has been incredibly devoted to her students ever since. When she moved to part-time in 2022, it was hard for her to give up advisory, so she continued to meet one-on-one with her former advisees until they graduated. Dr. Docter has been one of the pioneers of X Block, which provides Upper School students with the opportunity to take an extra class in the evening in a mix of synchronous and asynchronous learning. In addition to being highly skilled in teaching AP courses such as AP U.S. History, one of her favorite courses to teach is World Studies, as she loves providing a strong foundation for ninth-grade students. She shares her effervescent energy and generosity of her spirit and time with both her students and her colleagues.

In retirement, Dr. Docter will devote her time to growing As Yourself, her new health coaching business. She and her husband are also excited to spend more time in California with their parents, as well as visiting their children (including alum Toby Thornburg ’22) and grandchildren.
