Since 2019, Stephen C. ’23 has eagerly awaited the chance to represent his home country of China in a national ice hockey tournament. On January 16th, he will take the ice to compete in the 2023 Ice Hockey U20 World Championship in Iceland. In this week-long tournament, Stephen and team China will compete against teams from Mexico, Serbia, Iceland, Taiwan, and Belgium.
Stephen grew up playing ice hockey in Beijing. Competing on China’s National Team is something he has always wanted to do.
“I’m honored to represent my country; this is an opportunity that I have been waiting for,” Stephen said. “I’m definitely nervous to compete but I feel like right now I’m really ready to do this.”
Here at Hun, Stephen is a four-year member of Hun’s varsity ice hockey team and credits the program for nurturing him as a player.
“Being that I’m the goalie, I’m the last line of defense for my team. If I make a mistake, the whole team suffers. It’s a big responsibility and it comes with a lot of pressure but it’s also great motivation,” Stephen explained. “Coach McNally and the team have helped me learn how to battle through adversity and how to come back from being knocked down.”
As Stephen gears up to compete with his team, he wanted to thank his Hun teachers, coaches, and dorm parents for working with him and allowing him the flexibility to travel home to compete in this tournament.
