two Hun alumnae pose together at Macy's

Sarah Staller ’06 always knew she wanted to work in fashion, even more so when a career day at The Hun School introduced her to an alumna in the industry. Fast forward more than a dozen years later and Staller is thriving in fashion as a buyer for Macy’s.

Based in the flagship New York City store, she curates a brand-new lifestyle collection of men’s active outdoor and surf clothing sold in all brick-and-mortar stores across the country, as well as online. It’s a dream job, which she is quick to point out before adding that the math skills she honed in high school are put to good use every day.

Her willingness to support the Hun community is evident in her relationship with Rakiyah White ’13. The two were connected through Janine Russo Vanisko '83, Director of Alumni Engagement and Reunion Giving, before White landed her own dream job at Macy’s. As an assistant designer, White designs women’s clothing for the JM Collection, a brand exclusive to Macy’s. Seeing her creations in stores never ceases to thrill, but it’s also the realization of a dream she’s had since she was a little girl. For this fashionista who took AP Studio Art at Hun, creating beautiful objects has always been her raison d’être.

Though Staller and White didn’t cross paths at Hun due to a seven-year difference, their shared background of attending the school unites them. “We walked the floor at Macy’s together the first time we met and just having that small connection of both going to Hun—it really means something,” says Staller.
