Mike Donahue carves up some BBQ

Spend five minutes with parent Mike Donahue and his appreciation for The Hun School is infectious. While he knew he wanted his son Alex ’21 to attend boarding school, he let his son make the selection.

“My wife Kenda limited the choices to New Jersey,” he says with a laugh, before adding, “But Alex is the one who chose Hun.” While Alex initially wanted to remain home with his friends, the Donahues encouraged him to challenge himself. “We pulled the parent card,” jokes Mike. “But by the time we picked him up for Thanksgiving break, Alex loved it. We’d have to drag him kicking and screaming from here.” 

Alex is a boarding student, but with his family home in Freehold, the Donahues are familiar faces on campus. “I’m here a lot—especially in the fall for soccer games.” Mike’s frequent visits have allowed him to experience the Hun community firsthand. “It’s like a family and everyone really respects each other. The teachers here care so much about the students.” It’s why Mike and Kenda choose to volunteer their time, contributing to various efforts. Donahue, a member of a competition BBQ team, shows his Hun spirit by cooking for the annual faculty/staff appreciation luncheon. This year, he worked through the night to make 36 racks of ribs, 30 pounds of pulled pork, and 60 pounds of brisket. “I believe we all have a stewardship responsibility, to make this place better than when your kids arrived. You give the school the biggest investment of your life (your kids).”
