In 2000, Coach Stone took over a program that was coming off of 8 win and 7 win seasons. Since taking over the program he has a record of 116-59. Hun has finished first or tied for first in the MAPL league regular season 4 of the last 6 years.
Before coming to Hun he served as an Assistant Basketball Coach at the University of Rochester for two years. Rochester is a program with a strong tradition including 3 final four appearances since 1990 and a Division III National Championship in 1990. The team posted records of 16-7 and 15-8 in Coach Stone’s two years and earned a trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament. While serving as an assistant coach he also received his Master of Science in Secondary Education from the University of Rochester.
Prior to his time at Rochester, Coach Stone spent 5 years playing basketball professionally in Europe. He played for the Chester Jets in Chester, England, Bayern Muenchen in Munich Germany, and the Dungannon Basketball Club in Dungannon, N. Ireland.
While living in Dungannon, Coach Stone developed and led a program to bring Catholics and Protestants together to play basketball. The program was designed to build relationships by bringing together both sides of the community who have had trouble peacefully coexisting. He received an award as an Ambassador of Goodwill from the Monroe County Legislature for his efforts. Coach Stone continues to stay involved as Associate Director of Peace Players International (www.peaceplayersintl.org) a non-profit organization that continues to implement the fundamentals that he established in N. Ireland as well as in South Africa, Israel, Cyprus and New Orleans.
Before his career in Europe Coach Stone had a short stint with The Harlem Globetrotters organization as a member of the Washington Generals (the Globetrotters regular opponent). His time included tours to Europe, The Middle East, and Central America.
Before his professional basketball career, Coach Stone attended Colgate University, Class of 1992. During his career at Colgate he was a two year captain, three time team MVP, two time team Most Improved Player, and still holds the single game scoring record with 52 points in a game. He also is Colgate’s all time FG% leader with a career average of 56%. Coach Stone ended his career as an All-Patriot League player averaging 19.3 points and 7 rebounds per game, with a streak of 47 consecutive games scoring in double figures, and a streak of 85 consecutive games started.
Coach Stone is a teacher in the Upper School Mathematics Department, and Athletic Liaison to the office of College Counseling, and head girls' varsity lacrosse coach. He also serves as a faculty representative to the Board of Trustees.
Coach Stone also runs a weeklong summer basketball camp at The Hun School in early August for boys ages 8 to 15. Information is available by contacting Coach Stone or the Summer Programs Office.
