Carnegie Hall Welcomes Two Hun Performers

Hun School students Spyridon Avgoustiniatos ’14 and Andrew Zhou ’13 performed on the world’s most famous stage, Carnegie Hall, Monday, October 8th, with the Princeton Chinese Music Ensemble (ChiME). The pair performed the Dance of the Yao Tribe, with musicians from Princeton University and a collaborative of celebrated professionals.

“Having the opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall was an honor and will be a memory I will value for the rest of my life,” Spyridon said.

Spyridon and Andrew began rehearsing with ChiME at the start of the academic year – Spyridon on trumpet and Andrew on guzheng, a Chinese string instrument. Preliminary competitions were held at Princeton University on Saturday and Sunday, October 6th and 7th, during which Andrew placed first for his performance on the guzheng.

“Spyridon and I were given an opportunity to bring further depth to the group’s performance at Carnegie Hall and to experience the festival in a truly wonderful way,” said Andrew.

The concert concluded an international Chinese music festival, co-hosted by the Princeton Chinese Music Ensemble and the American Alliance for World Music and Arts. The festival brought together internationally acclaimed musicians, composers, and educators for three days of demonstrations, workshops, competitions, and concerts, October 6th – 8th.

“Being part of the ensemble, I have formed a deep appreciation for Chinese music and culture,” explained Spyridon. “I want to share my appreciation for Chinese music through a Chinese music ensemble at Hun.”

As a result of their experience and the inspiration of their teacher and ChiME director Yi Yang, Spyridon, Andrew, and Performing Arts Department Chair Deborah Watts are doing exactly that. The Hun School Chinese Music ensemble will begin rehearsals next week.
