Discovery Program
Middle School students are growing, maturing, and learning about who they are as young adolescents and are shaping who they will be in the future. This can be a challenging and sometimes stressful time as they confront social issues and begin making decisions about how to apply important values in their lives. Our Discovery Program provides students with an opportunity to consider important adolescent issues in a safe and comfortable setting, and also offers a formal means for reinforcement of our Hun core values. Discovery classes meet weekly and are organized in grade-level groups for a discussion and a related interactive, fun and educational activity.
The 6th grade topics include stress and time management, internet safety, bullying, and diversity. The 7th grade curriculum includes peer relationships, nutrition, conflict resolution, and an introduction to the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol. In 8th grade students discuss gender stereotypes, body image, peer pressure, rumors and gossip, and preparation for high school life.
A unique and positive aspect of the Discovery Program is the interaction of our Upper School students with the Middle School students. The senior Peer Leaders, Hun School Diversity Club, and Students Against Destructive Decisions (S.A.D.D) visit classes and lead discussions and activities. Other enrichment includes programs led by then Princeton Corner House Teen Advisory Group (TAG) and GAIA program.
